Welcome to Ivers J. Norton!
Home of the Husky Pups
The 2009-2010 school year brings many opportunities to grow as an learning community. I count it a true privilege to be your principal. It's my pleasure to work with you to create a positive, inspiring, learning environment for students; as well as a positive, inspiring, teaching environment for staff members.
This year our school culture committee has worked to create a positive start to the new year. Our new school-wide rules - Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe - are the foundation on which we can build our academic program. Students who are aware of how to follow these 3 rules in all areas of our school feel confident and self-assured. They make great decisions and exhibit self control. Our staff makes quite an effort to 'catch them in the act' of making good choices and follow up with praise and recognition. Our newly created P.A.W.S. cards(Positively Awesome Work Sighted) are presented to students as staff members spot them making good choices.
Please use our Building Positive School Culture Guide as a tool to talk with your child(ren) about our behavioral expectations here at IJN. It contains all our school-wide rules (that are actually on posters throughout the school) and provides information to use as discussion starters at home. Topics include: arrival/dismissal, hallways and stairwells, cafeteria, play/recess areas, bathrooms, special events, assemblies, homework cycle, anti-bullying, and our school pledge.
The staff of Ivers J. Norton Elementary is an incredibly caring group of instructors who work diligently to meet the academic needs of our Pre-K - 5th grade students. Our teachers are supported by trained classroom aides and given much curriculum support by our Reading First Literacy Coach, Mrs. Pamela Neary. IJN students also benefit from having 2 Title 1 reading teachers, 2 speech pathologists, a resource room teacher, an occupational therapist, a physical therapist, and 2 nurses.
Open House is a great time for you to meet everyone and tour the building. Please come and join the celebration of the new school year by coming from 7-8:15. The book fair will be open as well.
I look forward to meeting you then!
Sincerely,
Linda Nottingham, IJN Principal
