World Language
The language choice is a personal matter. One language is not superior to another. Each language offers possibilities for travel, career, opportunities and experience in a different cultural environment.
Note: All students (unless I.E.P. exempt) must pass level one of a foreign language, or repeat the course until a passing mark is achieved
Modern Languages
OBJECTIVE: Development of the ability to communicate in a foreign language; furtherance of the pupil's awareness of the world in which they live; promotion of social understanding; recognition of the contributions of different people to our national growth and development; aid to international understanding.
Spanish 1 or French 1 ( 1 UNIT)
Development of audio-lingual proficiency in areas related to pupil's everyday life; introduction to life in France and French speaking countries-Spain and Latin America.
Spanish 2 or French 2 (1 UNIT)
Further development of the ability to comprehend and communicate; areas of reading, high-frequency, conversational, vocabulary and grammatical structures emphasis; study of culture continued.
Prerequisite: Passed Spanish 1 or French 1 and the proficiency exam.
Spanish 3 or French 3 (1 UNIT)
Increased reading and writing of the language; improved fluency; expanded awareness of the culture. A comprehensive Regents examination is offered at the end of this course.
Prerequisite: Passed Spanish 2 or French 2
AV/CC Spanish 4 or French 4 (1 UNIT)
Emphasis on listening, speaking, reading and writing. The course uses authentic materials to further enhance and enrich the four skills toward checkpoint C (fluency). Cultural experience includes exchange visits to French/Spanish speaking countries. This is an advanced course. Upon successful completion of the course students will be granted 3 credits for Spanish 251 or French 251 at JCC.
Prerequisite: Passed Spanish 3 or French 3
AV/CC Spanish 5 or French 5 (1 UNIT)
Continuation of study with special emphasis on literature, films of the 20th Century, and cultural experiences including exchanges. This is an advanced course. Upon successful completion of the course students will be granted 3 credits for Spanish 252 or French 252 at JCC.
