Ronald F. Garvey, M.D., MBA
OHS Class of 1945Ronald F. Garvey graduated from Olean High in 1945 and later played three years of varsity football and graduated from Harvard College in 1949. Harvey also graduated from the University of Buffalo School of Medicine in 1953, and gained an Air Force sponsored internship which ultimately led to a position as an Air Force Flight Surgeon at Brooks Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.
Dr. Garvey left the Air Force as a captain and was accepted in the surgical training program at Parkland and UT Southwestern in 1956. He completed the program in June of 1960 and later embarked upon his professional career as a surgeon.

Kathleen Woods Masalski, M.Ed.
OHS Class of 1957Kathleen Woods Masalski, M.Ed. graduated from Olean High in 1957 and later earned her Bachelor of Arts in History from Miami (Ohio) University, and Masters in Education from the University of Massachusetts.
In 1990, Kathleen joined the Five College Center for East Asian Studies at Smith (Mass.) College, where she now serves as director. Her responsibilities include teaching at UMass, organizing regional seminars, and directing study-tours in Asia for teachers in the Northeast.
Throughout her career, Kathleen has received many honors, such as the National Social Studies Teacher Award and a commendation from the Foreign Ministry of Japan. She regularly speaks at professional conferences and authors articles and curriculum units for publication. Kathleen serves on local, regional and national boards that promote learning and teaching about Asia.

John McCarthy, Ph.D.
OHS Class of 1979Dr. John McCarthy is a professor in the Department of Counseling at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), where he’s taught since 2001. McCarthy has directed the university’s Center for Counselor Training and Services since its inception in 2005.
Dr. McCarthy also taught at St. Bonaventure University, Slippery Rock University, and National Chengchi University in the Republic of China. He received his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Missouri – Kansas City, and completed his pre-doctoral internship at the University of Florida. Dr. McCarthy has Masters Degrees from the University of Arizona and St. Bonaventure University.
Dr. McCarthy’s interests include cognitive therapy, motivational interviewing and adolescent depression. Five of John’s siblings also graduated from Olean High, and his father was a teacher at OHS in the 1940’s.
