Dear OIMS 4th and 5th Grade Families,
It is my pleasure to welcome you to an exciting year at Olean Intermediate Middle School.  It's hard to believe but it's that time again-the beginning of a new school year.  Welcome back! And while you may not be part of the teaching staff, you play an equally important role in your child's education.
Your student receives the best education when you and our dedicated teachers work as a team.  It's a family's enthusiasm, support and involvment that inspire children to do their best, along with a teacher's ability to impart the knowledge children need to learn.  Together we can achieve wonderful things.
There's a lot of excitement ahead of us, including new teachers to meet, new books to read, new friends to make and new skills to master...and I look forward to you sharing in those exciting times.  As a familyman, I know how fast times goes by.  One year your child is in 1st grade, and seemingly in the blink of an eye they're in intermediate school, or in their senior year of high school for that matter.
I encourage you to fully embrace the moment and urge you to take the time from your busy schedule to become familiar with our school, as well as to create a homework-friendly home environment that will allow your student to excel.
This year our school day will again begin at 8:15 am and end at the 3:10 pm time.  Students are expected to promptly leave the building at dismissal time to board their bus or to walk home.  Students are not permitted to remain after school unless they are involved in an activity supervised by a staff member.
The safety of our students and staff is the District's highest priority.  Before December 1st of this year, we will complete 8 fire drills, 4 lock down drills, 2 bus drills, and 1 full building evacuation drill.  If you have any questions or concerns about our emergency procedures, please don't hesitate to contact the school.
As a reminder to families, in order to enhance our school-to-home communications, we distribute an agenda book and family handbook to each student.  These publications serve as a vital link between home and school.  Additional communication networks such as our school website (www.oleanschools.org) and ParentSquare can help keep you up-to-date on your student's homework assignments, projects and test dates.
Our goal for the 2021-2022school year is to create an outstanding intermediate/middle school where all children can learn, grow, and experience success both inside and outside of the classroom.
Our theme for this school year is HAPPY...
In order to foster an environment that encourages this kind of academic and personal success, we firmly adhere to the guidelines outlined in the District Code of Conduct and the OIMS Progressive Disciplinary Matrix.  Please take some time to familiarize yourself with these documents as they contain clear expectations and consequences for student behavior and important information related to the rights and responsibilities of students and their families.
Your help is apprecitated and needed.
When you arrive at shcool 4th grade will enter at the Main entrance and 5th grade will enter at the Library Hallway doors located next to the glass staircase doors.
If you have any concerns, comments, or questions please do not hesitate to call or email.  I look forward to working with you and your student(s) as he/she prepares for the challenges that lie ahead.
Once again, welcome to the 2021-2022 shcool year.  We look forward to working with you to nurture a passion for learning within your child!  This year, classes will begin for students on Wednesday, September 8, 2021.  Thank you for your commitment to your student's education and I look forward to seeing you in the very near future.
    Educationally Yours,
    Joel Whitcher
    Principal, Grades 4-5
